{ci: Verse 1}
[Am]Me and Buddy Whatshisname, [C]the other feller Don
[Dm]We was off to jig some cod before the [E7]cod fish are all gone
[Am]We packed that boat [C]with enough to float for [G]three days past the dawn
[Dm]Floating on the [E7]sea and singing [Am]songs
{ci: Verse 2}
[Am]Well Buddy owned the boat [C]yea he was one salty lad
[Dm]Fifth generation fisherman he [E7]bought it from his dad
[Am]That VHF [C]weather report said we [G]were all clear to sail
Among the [Dm]ice bergs, the [E7]seagulls and the [Am]whales
{ci: Verse 3}
[Am]I was in charge of the galley serving [C]boiled-in-oil cod
[Dm]And Don was entertainment he had a [E7]trunk of all things odd
[Am]Drums and springs, and [C]reeds and strings there's [G]something for us all
[Dm]To be jamming when we [E7]reached our port of [Am]call
{ci: Verse 4 - Spoken}
[Am]I swear by jeez you're never gonna [C]believe what happened next
[Dm]A flaming ball burst through the heavens like [E7]some dogmatic text
[Am]It was a rock from space and it [C]laid waste of that [G]big diesel in the hull
[Dm]And for Don's trunk it was an [E7]instrumental [Am]cull
{ci: Chorus}
[F]We're the sort that can make a home [C]just about anyplace
So [F]Don built a banjo, a squeeze-box, a [C]kick-drum and a [G]bass
[F]A fish-hook fretted paddle-shaft was [C]strung up to a pail
[F]Reconstituted reeds and bellows and [C]sewn in bits of [G]sail
[F]A willow-sprung whalebone drumstick beating [C]rhythm on the hull
That [Dm]seal-gut fuel-cell bass machine was [E7]anything but dull [Am]
{ci: Verse 5}
[Am]We'd a been sorry had we taken the dory on this [C]trip struck by fate
[Dm]But buddy's big boat was still afloat so it was [E7]time to innovate
[Am]We had a ten-horse kicker and we [C]ran it on liquor - it hadn't [G]fired since '84
[Dm]Before too long we [E7]made it to the [Am]shore
{ci: Verse 6}
[Am]Down the coast there's a little outpost that's [C]in a lovely sheltered cove
[Dm]We told our lassies we'd be tipping our glasses [E7]here when the nights get cold
[Am]There is no big hurry, [C]there's no one to worry who'd [G]believe us anyhow
[Dm]We used the tide and we [E7]beached our battered [Am]scow
{ci: Verse 7}
[Am]There is a harmonic resonance [C]from everything in sight
[Dm]Don could now mine the sound [E7]from a meteorite
[Am]It's easy to play and [C]one might say that it [G]takes a certain technique
[Dm]One thing for certain it [E7]really is [Am]unique
{ci: Verse 8 - Spoken}
[Am]Should the universe throw you a curse in the [C]most unpredictable way
[Dm]Just give it a wink and try to think of what a [E7]Newfoundlander might say
[Am]You have to make due with what's [C]given to you and [G]have fun along the way
[Dm]And make the most of [E7]every single [Am]day
