Outlaw Country

Outlaw country emerged in the 1970s as artists pushed back against Nashville’s polished country sound and industry conventions. Rooted in honky-tonk, folk, blues and traditional country, it favours raw production, independent spirit and songs about hard living, freedom and life outside the lines. Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and others made the outlaw attitude an enduring part of country music.
